Completely agree. It was the same for me. And I struggle with people who don't want to do it. I don't say that we have to sound like this guy or like this guy, but when we love a production then it's always very interesting to search what makes this mix so specific. Challenging as you said is the right word to increase our level. 😊🙏

👍🏻, but I don’t really know how to do that and which song would perfectly fit as a reference song. I often think according to the mix Chicago‘s „Niagara Falls“ is a perfect sounding mix for me, but would it really fit to my music which is also more 70th - 80th sounding music than that of today … Is there a perfect reference song for more genres or must it fit to the genre of my music which is more harmonic rock-ballads …?

I think another aspect is like when i started out even with reference tracks I wasnt knowledgeable how to make proper changes. For ex for saturation, Limiting, EQ, sidechain etc. I just increased Volume and frequencies... not knowing what achives a certain result. So learn Learn Learn.

Look for reference tracks that haven't been mastered. Finished songs can push you in the wrong direction
