Where I’m from those are called prickly pears they one of my favourite fruits. Just be careful the brown dots have little hairs that if touched can go into your skin and cause irritation.

We also eat the "leaves", they are called "nopales". Cook them in salty water, rinse and add chopped raw onions, cilantro and tomatoes 😋

Pro tip . Steal the leaf of a cactus and grow it that way . It's much faster. Whenever we move we always just take a couple of leafs with us place it on the ground at the new house with a brick on top and water it a little. In a couple of days it'll have sprouted Roots and then after its grown out we enjoy a massive supply of turksvye (aka prickly pears) .
We live in South Africa with a warmer climate than Canada but my point is we've farmed our own prickly pears since before I was born. We farm it for personal consumption but if we were to sell them we'd probably make a profit as here in South Africa a pack of 6 is very expensive considering the fact that you can just pluck a cactus leaf in the field and grow your own cactus and get your own prickly pears. They are very low maintenance so you can just forget about them and just give them water every now and then.

I just read that if you have bug problems with your plants, you should place banana peels and fruit at the base. The pests hate the smell and abandon ship!

I don't even know where those seeds came from, few days ago i noticed them growing on my rain lily flower pot. I didn't immediately pull them out since they looked cute. Now i see....

I remember I ate a dragon fruit few months ago lol, by any chance it couldn't be grown magically from that right ?😂

How long did it take to sprout in the paper towel? I’ve tried the paper towel method and after 3 weeks nothing happened, it actually got moldy so I threw it away. I did it again but still nothing happened. I’m confusion

Eastern prickly pears are ones the worlds most cold hardy cactus they survive very cold temperatures there native to northeast USA and can probably grow in Canada maybe with protection and make edible fruits.

Wait you can put exposed roots to soapy water? Isn't it like bad for the plant??

Those prickly pears grow everywhere in Texas and are like a weed to the point that if a pad falls on the ground it most likely will root

Wow you have a lot of patience. I tried growing dragonfruit from seeds got few saplings, but that was it no growth at all. Glad your cacti made it

I want to hear what other gardeners think of the soapy water trick. I hate fungus gnats, but I don't want to burn the roots. I notice you left some soil on there. Did you rinse after 5 minutes or some other period of time?
