The Binary Zipper Funnel 🤐

Sometimes you can only learn by doing, and in this case I learned that I spent a whole week designing a mechanical latch system, only to realize it wasn’t necessary with the right funnel design. It took a few iterations, but once I got it right the balls from each stream just zipper into place creating a beautiful and very satisfying visual.

In my experience, any engineer worth their salt isn't afraid to render large amounts of their own work irrelevant because they figured out a better solution to a previous problem.

Watching people reencounter and re-solve the same problems Marten encountered on his Marble Machine is my favorite pastime

Video 1: I can't use a funnel because it jams

This video: I should have just used a funnel

Think those steel balls followed Gyro's five lessons

seeing that you overengineered just makes me feel less stupid when i dramatically overthink complex solutions to simple problems lmfao. love how you document the entire process & love your work bro! can’t wait to see what this project turns out to be

This is how road engineers solve for traffic flow. Nice demo you've here

You should make all these balls race... You could call it a Steel Ball Run, maybe?

Dude your videos have single handedly changed my life. I was losing sleep over how to organize my immense steal ball collection, pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to get them from point A to Point B. Nothing was working. But you have given me new hope that my balls will be safe and sound. 🙏🏼

man it's so satisfying how smoothly the steel balls run

You know what? That's very clever. Always find that engineering puts me off because you can't really be expressive with it as you would with art. But here you are making goofy stuff and putting it on the internet and letting other people enjoy it in all of its glory. And you get to make things and just have fun with it and then the finished product is just something fun. And sharing that is amazing! I'm not going to lie to you that sounds like a really nice business model. Might steal it lol

this is engineering. one idea into another until a new idea replaces teh first idea and start again

I think you’ve confused what “steep” and “shallow” angles are. The second iteration here would be a shallower angle, not a steeper one. More degrees = more steep, less degrees = more shallow.
