Fiddaun Castle is a six-storey castle, built-in 1574, and once considered to be the largest castle in all of Ireland due to the amount of land that was encompassed within its outer walls.

Fiddaun Castle is a tower house situated between Lough Doo and Lough Aslaun, near the village of Tubber, about five miles southwest of Gort.

The castle was owned by the O’Shaughnessy family and guarded the western parts of their lands. The castle was forfeited in 1697 when Sir William O’Shaughnessy, who was only fifteen fled to France to fight as a captain in the Jacobite cause and later became a Mareschal de Camp in 1734.

Fiddaun Castle was continuously inhabited by O'Shaughnessy's until 1727. Although now uninhabited and missing its top story the castle is remarkably preserved with many inner features still intact.

The most notable feature of this rectangular tower house is the remarkably well-preserved inner bawn wall. The tower is a six-story structure with vaulted ceilings over the first and fifth floors, and an attic on the top floor. There are square box-shaped bartizans on the northern and southern corners at the third-floor level. The bawn is a rectangle with a three-story gatehouse in the northwestern wall, and a triangular point on the southwest wall. The outer wall is now mostly in ruins, but at one tie enclosed a massive twelve acres. Fiddaun Castle is on private land and is now maintained by the Office of Public Works.
