Suez Canal blocked after huge container ship wedged across it - BBC News

A giant container ship the length of four football pitches has become wedged across Egypt's Suez Canal, blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes.

Dozens of vessels are stuck, waiting for rescue boats to free the 400m-long (1,312ft) ship, which was knocked off course by strong winds.

Egypt has reopened the canal's older channel to divert some traffic until the grounded ship can move again.

While working as a merchant marine engineer on a 30, 000 ton bulk ship, we transited the Suez several times while delivering food aid from the U.S. to Africa. Even on a good day, there was already a lot of traffic anchored and waiting for canal transit. Even if the 200, 000 ton box carrier is freed quickly, it could take weeks to clear the back log of ships.
