To clear this up:
A soft clipper allows a little bit of the master signal to peak over 0db which allows the loudest instruments of the mix (such as the kick, snare and 808) to maintain their original transients which allows for a punchier mix. Although, it is clipping your mix. Clipping is a form of distortion and because of this your mixes will sound more distorted compared to using a limiter for example which is completely to taste.

A high end boost is a good way to make the higher frequency based instruments (such as the snares, claps and hi hats) more present in the mix but you shouldn't only boost in the 8k range. I have seen a lot of people make this mistake, instead boost in the 2k range. This will allow every high end instrument to be affected by the boost and not just the hi hats. Boosting at 8k only is only boosting instruments that have frequencies resonance above 8000hz which is quite literally only the hi hats. Also, kbeazy is wrong when he says in this video that a high end boost at 8k will boost the kick significantly because the kick only has its prominent frequencies around the 30-200hz range which is the "low end" of the mix. Boosting above 2khz will not affect the kick drastically if anything it is only boosting the "air" of the instrument which is good for clarity. The reason why you should do this is so that lo-fi systems (low fidelity) can hear the sounds clearer. In mastering for songs every master chain includes this at some point so it is good to apply it but very tastefully, do not over do it. Adding 8db of high end for a beat will make it extremely hard to mix for a mastering engineer who has to later down in the line mix it for an artist. You can do what kbeazy says later on in the video as-well if you feel as if a certain instrument doesn't have enough clarity by adding 1-2db of high end on what you need it for but make sure to be boosting frequencies that actually have resonance. For example, boosting the 8k range of a snare wont add clarity the snare specifically but adding 2-4k for example will because that particular instrument has resonant frequencies in that range.

Removing lower frequencies for melodies is a good tip but kbeazy didn't explain it well. Don't just remove lower frequencies from your samples, remove literally any frequency in your mix that doesn't work well. For example, not a lot of people cut 30hz of the low end of there kicks but there is no need for that low end range to be present in your kicks. By removing that low end out of your kick it will allow your 808 to push through more in the mix. Do this for anything sound that doesn't need a certain frequency in the mix, you need to make your own judgement for this because it is different for every beat because everyone uses different sounds. Some snares don't need low end, some 808's don't need high end, some sounds don't need touched period make your call and watch your mixes change instantly. People say that sound selection is key for this sole reason, if your sounds are ass your mixes will be ass because you cant change anything about the sound. You much better having a sound with too much resonance in frequency than too little because its all in your hands to change it then.

Mastering is for commercial use, not personal use! (bear with me...) you don't need to master your beats if you don't intend to sell them online to a mass audience. The whole point of mastering is too fit industry standards for what is commercially acceptable in the industry. If the "in thing" in music was to have uncompressed, quiet and muddy songs then everybody's songs would sound that way because there is always a standard for what sounds "good" in music. Also, 90% of producers have never worked or seen a mastering engineer work, they just assume what sounds good. Mastering music is a profession for a reason, if your master sounds bad research and learn how to correct through professionals as you would learning how to drive a car or fly a plane.... you think pilots pick up flying planes of you-tube? its not a hard thing to grasp. You don't NEED to master, your a producer.

Hope this helps, 100 likes and ill make a tutorial since the response i got last time. And before someone tries to call me hypocritical for calling out a producer on not knowing how to master and then proceeding to tell other producers how to master i have researched and taught myself through the help of professionals on how to mix and master, im not saying you should take my advice or kbeazy's with this post, i'm telling you to research the topic further than youtube. Last thing, can people please stop buying producers drum kits, they have no idea how to sound design and are literally grabbing a sound, throwing distortion on that bih, renaming it and exporting with edison. Alex Tumay (young thug engineer) touched on this subject before, when producers used to send him beats instead of telling them how to make there beats sound better he told them to change there sound selection. Just because a producer made a hit with a sound doesn't mean the sound is the most high quality sound file you can find on earth, experiment. And if your gonna make a drum kit, learn how to make your own sounds. Where do you think the beloved "SPINZ 808" came from in the first place....

All the best, SamBrodieBeats.

1. Don’t use Fruity Limiter on master
2. Use a soft clipper on master
3. Don’t EQ the master after the soft clipper
4. EQ individual drums to make crispier
5. EQ the low end out of melodies

Turn all 3 envelope knobs down to 0 and turn the ceiling up all the way and then adjust your gain from there. Your shit will hit then. Obviously the soft clipper or any other clipper is good too

I found that the right hi-hat will make your kicks and 808s punch harder too. It's important to use the right hi-hats for your drums or just eq them correctly. Personally I have been adding some slight reverb to my snare and claps, it creates a more open sound and makes the beat a little better. really depends on the beat though
