Depression The Basics

Modern study of depression only began in the 1960s and 1970s. Most people suffering from depression seek care from their primary care physicians who may lack the sophistication necessary to treat this complicated disorder.

During any given year about 4-6% of the population experiences depression. Onset typically begins between ages 18-43 years with a smaller peak late in life. Depression attacks women twice as frequently as men.

Episodes tend to begin gradually and last an average of 3-6 months. Recurrences appear extremely common with approximately 4 episodes during an average lifetime. Unfortunately some progress to chronic depression with symptoms present in excess of 3 years.

The major complication of depression continues to be suicide even among those on therapy. A majority of those with depression experience pain and many abuse alcohol or opioids. Depression often occurs along with a variety of other psychiatric disorders including anxiety, PTSD and social anxiety.

Unfortunately the official criteria necessary to diagnose depression continues to change. None of the symptoms occur exclusively with depression. The cause of this disorder eludes investigators.

You mentioned there’s no imaging for depression, physicians should be taking MRI’s of the brain and see if it shows signs of PTSD, most people that suffer from depression is due to some or several types of trauma in their lives

Mixed-Anxiety-Depressive Disorder diagnosed in 2019 after hospitalization for trying to end my life (see if youtube crosses that out again). The anxiety itself had been very bad for years: I read on the internet the other day that this chronic anxiety does something to the brain which eventually causes the severe depressive episode.

Pity something in the CSF can't help with detecting biochemical changes related to Anxiety and Depressions.

I have major depressive disorder, along side agoraphobia, generalise anxiety disorder and insomnia.
I haven’t been able to work for 6 years, I am basically housebound.
I see a GP, psychiatrist and psychologist.
I’ve tried over 20 medications and ECT.
All did not work.
I am treatment resistant.
I don’t know what to do 😢 I want my life back!
My psychiatrist wants to do ketamine, but he doesn’t know how to go about having it done.
I am in Australia.

Dr. Do what are your thoughts on testing sites like Doctors Data that checks the levels of neurotransmitters in the urine to see what you may be dealing with?
