AlmaLinux is a new and upcoming distribution that's aimed to be a replacement for CentOS. Also forked from RHEL, AlmaLinux aims to be the "Forever Free Enterprise-Grade Distribution". In this video, I give AlmaLinux a first look and share my thoughts.

One of the CentOS founders, started a project called Rocky Linux. Perhaps these projects should join forces..

This is an important distro for a lot of people. We should recognise that this distro may become the new default for people who want to run their own servers without the need of corporate support (like Centos was).
Yes, I know Debian is also a popular choice, but some server grade packages work best in a RHEL centric environment. And the more choices we have, the better for the community. I really hope this project goes all the way!

Installed 8.3 rc1 and it works like a charm. Fast and flawless. I'm impressed
Btw - thx 4 the informative video.

Thank you, Jay. I hope that this distro serves that market well.

When the official release comes out it would be useful to know what makes Alma different than other server/enterprise distros.

If you installed from the 1.9GB "minimal" media, it is broken. That isn't just an AlmaLinux thing. The CentOS minimal media is also broken in that way. Pick whatever packages you want during the install, but you don't get them. You really need to use the boot media (aka netinstall) or the full DVD to get an installer that will allow you to actually pick the packages you want AND install them.

After RockyLinux comes out, can we have a video comparing the two - more from a server and community stand-point?

I'm unable to dual boot with Windows 10. The setup shows only 2.5MB free, whereas in reality there is 100GB of free partition.

Dumb comment but does anyone have the nice background seen on the lockscreen?

@2:37 Except G.N.O.M.E is an acronym and has nothing to do with the dwarf like creature. :D

So this is centos/rhel just with icons and new desktop wallpaper. Honestly you can make your very own in no time at all. All of the os work was already completed by rhel and centos. Rebadging an existing OS is trivial. While I'm happy this exists and I support their efforts there was very little they needed to do. This has all been available in centos/rhel for years. I think it's a bit misleading to suggest the work was done by Alma. (Past the rebadging)
