A look at one of the Caucasian ethnic groups with large numbers in the Russian Federation - The Abkhazians!

Disclaimer: Whilst Abkhazia and the Abkhazians are not part of the Russian Federation, the sheer numbers living in Russia have inclined me to make this video.

According to a story I've heard, the black Abkhazians are descended from African-born slaves in the Ottoman empire who managed to escape and settled in Abkhazia, which was not part of the Ottoman empire at the time and adopted Abkhazian language and culture .

The kingdom of abkhazia was quite georgian even before the merger (its capital was Kutaisi) and they didn't unify with georgia at that time there was no georgian state they unified with Tao klarjeti and then took over khakheti and merged with kartli . Also the 20th century part was somewhat oversimplified as from 1918-1921 they were part of the 1918 georgian republic while north Caucasus mountain confederation did claim it they had no control over it .also the war was oversimplified but outside of that not bad

Hello. I saw that you posted this video on reddit and for some reason got heavily downvoted. I think the assumption was that since your channel is called All About Russia, and you make video about the Abkhazians, you're assuming that Abkhazia is a pary of Russia. And that was quite offensive to the Georgians. But you're just making a video because they are a group of the Caucasus, related to the ethnic groups still existing in Russia and it does also have a Russian diaspora. However you should also make a video about the Ukrainians too then, as they're also a diaspora group that exist in Russia as well, in one fact the biggest minorities there. However honestly what do you think about renaming the channel from All about Russia to All about post-Soviet states? Because I think post-Soviet states shouldn't be analysed only through the new borders, as many ethnic groups are related even while existing in different countries. I think that would be interesting and you'd take about groups like the Karakalpaks or Talysh for example. I'm from a post Soviet State and I think that would be interesting.

I find it interesting that you didn't mention that over 2000 years ago Herodotus wrote about a black population of people with black skin and kinky hair called the Colochians living in this region. The idea that some of these black populations are ancient Egyptian colonists is out there and your omission of this idea is interesting at best 🤔

One thing I might add, Abkhazians are genetically identical to western Georgians (virtually indistinguishable from Megrelians, a sub-ethnos of Georgians). The name Abkhazian is disputed today, because Georgians claim that Abkhazian should signify a Georgian who lives in Abkhazia, while the people who this video is about (Apsua) claim that Abkhazian should refer only to them.

I prefer to see Abkhazian as just a regional denomination of a Georgian who lived in Abkhazia, and if you look at all the other part of Georgia, you will understand why. Moreover, the Kingdom of Abkhazia, from its very inception was culturally Georgian. The monarchs spoke Georgian, the church sermons were conducted in Georgian, all the byzantine sources referred to the Abkhazian Kingdom as Georgian, and all the manuscripts that kingdom of Abkhazia wrote were in Georgian. make of that what you will.

As an Abkhazian, I would like to thank for this brief and objective explanation about our culture. All of the things you've said is 100% truth, it is hard to see videos like this.
