How To Change Black To Transparent PNG In Photoshop

If you want to turn white into transparent instead, invert the colors on the layer mask.

Ctrl+Click on the black and white image (the top layer), then edit menu - copy. Now Alt+Click on the white mask, and edit - paste. Finally, double click on the name of tha layer. Don´t forget to turn of the view of the top layer

Whenever I try to paste the image into the mask, it just pastes a new layer with the image instead. I can’t figure out how to paste into the mask.

Thank you so much, this was so helpful for me as I had to isolate stars and nebulas from a space image originally on a black background to be on a transparent background. This tutorial along with some other quick modifications in colorizing, exposure and opacity got me the results I was hoping for!
