Nikon P950 vs Lumix FZ80 Comparison (Image & Video Quality Test)

Just a quick video testing/comparing the video quality between my two favorite superzoom cameras in 2020: the old and reliable Panasonic Lumix FZ80 and the brand new Nikon Coolpix P950. Let me know in the comments which you think did better.

TESTING METHOD
All the video footage was shot at 4k/30fps on both cameras using the default settings. Photos were shot in JPG with full auto. No footage or images were edited. I tried to match focal lengths as much as possible unless I was specifically comparing the zoom capabilities, wide-angle, or minimum focusing distance.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
1) The Panasonic FZ80 is still a superior camera for video in most cases. It routinely had better dynamic range and has more AF options in video mode.
2) The Nikon P950 is hands down the best wildlife camera for taking photos in 2020. With the extra ~800mm of zoom, you can get up close to any animal.
4) Really hope Panasonic releases an FZ80 mkII or FZ90 (or whatever they want to call it) with a flip around touchscreen and an AUX-in port.

Nice comparison. I've got the FZ80 myself (or FZ82 like it's called here in Europe) and I must say the Nikon has better bokeh and images look a tad sharper. But for that amount of money the FZ80 really is a bargain.

I think I preferred the colors on the FZ80 more than on the P950. They felt more real, rich, and natural to me. Perhaps a little green for the skin tone, but overall more pleasing to my eyes.

I've owned both of these cameras. I have 2 complaints regarding the FZ80. The cropping during video reduces frame size dramatically. There is also 'motor' audio from the stabilizer which is recorded during video. It cannot be heard over wind, music, voices....but in a silent scene it is prevalent. The noise can be eliminated by turning off the stabilization. I had this same 'audio' issue with two FZ80's. Regarding the P950. NO touch screen! It is also much larger than the FZ80 and rather cumbersome for use when hiking or similar circumstance. Both cameras require a tripod at MAX zoom if you want truly stable video.

Estuve buscando justo estas dos cámaras pero es muy dificil hacerse una idea de la calidad de la imagen en distintos entornos basado solo en reseñas de texto. Realmente esto era lo que necesitaba. :) ...Por otra parte, no veo mucha diferencia entre las dos cámaras excepto el alcance del zoom que para mi caso, que soy biologa y requiero apoyar mis observaciones e identificaciones de fauna en campo, este aspecto si hace una gran diferencia. Pero para alguien que no requiera tal alcance de zoom el precio de la Panasonic resulta muy favorable. Lo único que lamento de estas cámaras es su sensor tan pequeño, usé una nikkon coolpix b500 que entiendo trae el mismo sensor de la P950, y realmente se queda muy corta para atrapar la luz, en un dia nublado se perdia mucha nitidez y enfoque. Tal vez me puedieras aclarar si con las demás especificaciones y mejoras de la P950, a pesar de tener el mismo sensor, se pudiera llegar a tener una mejor calidad de fotos. Nuevamente gracias por compartir estas pruebas, ya tienes un suscriptor más !

I had the FCED last year and the pictures turned out to be pretty decent for the tiny sensor that it offers and the F2.8 to F5.9 is decent also especially for the range.

Surry! Nice video! Ive been using the FZ80 for a couple of years. I think the FZ80 has a lot of bang for the buck, and with some practice you can learn to get some very decent images with it.

Fz80 seems to pick up more light in the darker lit areas in daylight... P950 shows more shadow

Nice video, I've been looking for an upgrade to my Nikon CoolPix P500 and I narrowed it down to these two cameras. The lack of a flip-around screen was a real deal-breaker for me on the Panasonic and the higher Zoom on the P950 gives it an edge. Plus I think the P950 has an overall better image. I have an FZ 80 and the long range video is a bit washed out and grainy ( 60x zoom).. It shines at 12x or less.. great vids and pictures.

Jeez, that Nikon is too expensive for such little difference. FZ80 wins. Would rather go the DSLR route if I'm gonna spend north of $500. The P950 does capture water better and color is a little warmer, but I have photoshop.
