I traveled by train from Venice to Florence then to Cinque Terre (day hopper), and from Florence to Rome. Everything was ok, trains on time, great speed, good seats for reasonable prices. I highly recommend trains in Italy.

I just got back and I can confirm this is by far the best way to get around Italy. When you arrive at a major city buy a local metro or bus ticket in the train station or airport at a ticket machine, then you're all set to get around within the cities. A few major cities have electric scooters and bikes, those are extremely useful to get around on too in a pinch. I'd fly back out of Rome instead of backtracking all the way back to Milan, or start in Rome and fly out of Milan.

Beautiful video and great information :) As an Italian living in the US it's always so heartwarming to watch these videos of my home country and to see people's love for Italy and the Italian culture. My hubby and I have just spend two weeks travelling around Italy by train and it's the most amazing and romantic way to see and explore the country. Plus it's nice to have a break from driving. Florence and Capri were highlights for us but every place we went was so beautiful. Forever proud to be Italian 💚❤️

Went to Italy a year ago and used the train system for a very similar route, staying where we traveled to rather than going back and forth. Milan to Venice, (side trip to Trieste/then Slovenia/Trieste), Florence, Sorrento (where we stayed our longest, four days, very relaxing with side trips to Capri and Pompeii), Rome and back to Milan with side trip to Lake Como (Bellagio). Just an excellent time and the trains were great, even if the service was less than stellar - a 1.5 hour delay in Naples due to a local strike and discrimination, also in Naples against us as Americans in purchasing our tickets to Rome. It was a good tip to think of Italy as somewhat course and nonchalant so that when things went wrong one just needed to roll with it...better than feeling overly frustrated. There were always things that did not go as expected, or poor service (mainly in Milan/Naples), yet by expecting things to not be the best we enjoyed our trip immensely. Good video here, great information.

What a video guide for first or even second time travellers to Italy!

great video, the one thing I would suggest however would be to get a multi-destination plane ticket where you fly into Milan and home from Rome which helps to eliminate a lot of backtracking at the end of your 2-week suggestion. Multi-destination tickets are typically the same price but can also be cheaper and better lets you reverse the order of your trip if needed.
