📢 PR1 Trail Reopening – What You Need to Know!

I keep getting DMs asking when PR1 will reopen. So, on one of the coldest days of the year in Madeira, with snow in the mountains and temperatures below zero, here’s my answer:

“I don’t know”

But we expect it to reopen this spring. Repairs from the August 2024 wildfires are almost complete, so the wait is nearly over!

What if it’s still closed when you visit?

No worries! The most scenic 1.2 km section from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is open—and for 95% of visitors, that’s more than enough to experience PR1’s epic views.

How to make the most of it?

Instead of doing the full hike, combine it with PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira for two stunning perspectives—without needing an extra transfer. Plus, the drive offers amazing viewpoints you’d miss otherwise!
