Indiana gurl here and I’d never had these until my boyfriend’s grandmother made them when we visited and I met her for the first time. So delicious and she was a peach, now she’s long been up in the stars.

My grandmother made gooey butter cakes a lot.
They lived in Alabama mostly.
They did live in S.C. in their younger years.
She made the best, IMO.

I grew up on this stuff some 30 years ago, and when that ridiculous _As Seen On TV_ brownie pan that makes like 24 pieces with crispy edges on all four sides in a 16x9 pan, this was the only thing I could think to make in it (but then, I’ve always been a middle-brownie girl😋)

My mom's family all were from just outside St Louis in Milstadt Illinois and growing up we spent summers there. Gooey Butter cake was a favorite the local bakeries carried, but the VERY best was the cheesecake Mello's Bakery made. It's a dough type bottom with the best cheese-cake insides. The Bakery and other German Bakeries are long gone, but I've managed to make one very similar. There is a grocery store, Dierburgs did carry a close second but wish someone could replicate it!

I got this recipe from a restaurant in Houston. It's so good, make mine in my mixer. But it smells so good, both my dog and my neighbor's dog tried to get on the counter to get to it! We call it crack for dogs! Everyone loves gooey butter cake!

My mother taught me how to make this in the early 90s but she called it Neiman Marcus cakes or better than sex cake depending on who was in the room.

Neiman Marcus was because it's so rich and yummy.

It's really great if you use different flavored cake mixes for the base layer. I'm particularly fond of strawberry or lemon

Cali gurrll here, I put one stick of melted butter in the batter and only 2 cups of powder sugar... delicious. I also keep in the fridge overnight also very delicious. Enjoy🥳

My dad is from St Louis, so I grew up eating this. I brought it to school a few times and I was always surprised when the teachers would ask me for the recipe lol
