How To Smooth Out Harsh Scream Vocals With EQ

Harsh screaming vocals can be tricky to get right when mixing a metal production.

Even though screaming vocals can be (seemingly) hard to deal with, do we necessarily need to resort to overcomplicated EQ and mix trickery in order to help them fit into the mix?

Luckily, I have one simple EQ move that can really help your scream vocal tracks when looking to get them to sit just right.

Bobby: a high-shelf EQ in the vocal submix will focus the vocals in the midrange so they won’t clash with cymbals in the mix.
Me (to my vocalist): high shelf stuff mixed will help your vocals.
Vocalist: :buys expensive vodka and makes screwdrivers:

I never think about using the high shelf on vocals. I usually use a low pass and then EQ our specific frequencies. Gonna give this a go in my next mix. Great tip!

Mmm, so scream vocals don't sound as good where they're up-front? So that's why they sometimes sound kinda "too RAW".
