Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Katatonia. As I mentioned in the video, Katatonia is one of my favorite bands and I've been listening to them constantly over the last several years. While I haven't had any requests to feature their music on the LNL channel, I wanted to put this episode together, mainly because I'm a huge fan of their music and wanted to share this lesson with any viewers looking for some new music to sink their teeth (and fingers) into - let's dive in!

Katatonia formed in Sweden in 1991 and was originally an authentic Swedish Death Metal group with screaming vocals/corpsepaint, but over the years their style/sound has changed to more of an overly melodic prog-rock/metal style, with clean vocals and lots of moody melodic ideas floating around between the heavy riffs, ambient soundscapes, wicked guitar solos, mellow acoustic guitars, dreamy melodic textures, and the various other cool sounds found in their music.

The song examples in this lesson were pulled from Katatonia's most recent releases, including some very interesting chord-based ideas from songs such as 'Sanction,' 'Behind The Blood,' 'Onward Into Battle,' 'Second,' 'The Winter Of Our Passing,' 'Takeover,' and 'Pale Flag' - to name a few.

Needless to say, if you're a Katatonia fan, a fan of progressive rock/metal, or a guitarist searching for some new music to devour and useful ideas to borrow/explore - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I have listened to ‚City Burials‘ literally a thousand times and I still find new parts and twists in their songs. Unbelievable! I love your lesson and we all know that one can only scratch the surface .. like sailing on an ocean of melancholic melodies and complex metal music. Thank you indeed David!

THANK YOU for this episode! Katatonia is easily in my Top 5 bands of all time. Since I've heard 'For my demons' back in 1999. I was hooked. Please make Part 2 with albums from Discouraged Ones to The Great Cold Distance.

There are shockingly few deep dives into the very idiosyncratic approach to harmony and composition this band has. You're doing god's work here, very much appreciated!

Great episode! Katatonia has been of my favorite bands since 1996 and I love all eras of the band. The solo on untrodden from the last album is one of my favorite solos of all time.

Thanks for turning me on to these guys.
As an old Alice in Chains fanatic I adore this mix of haunting and heavy.

I found Katatonia at just the right time in my life. I was late to the party but the impact on my life is huge. It just feels right. So much so I have a Katatonia tattoo.

I happened on Katatonia about a year ago and I couldn't figure out why they 'fit' so well with my 'standards' until this LNL. A-minor, Ace, and it all came together. Thanks for featuring this band that definitely needs more exposure.

Back in the late 90s I listened to brave murder day and discouraged ones a TON. They still instantly transport me to that era.

Thanks Dave ... first time hearing about them.

Katatonia are extraordinarily beautiful chordsmiths and so much of their newer stuff just forces me to sit back and hear all the movement in the arrangement while somehow still being absolutely crushingly miserable and stirring

I've been fan of them for more than 20 years and still. The last album is fascinating. Thanks for the lesson.

Like Amorphis they started as a heavier band and evolved musically. Amorphis would be another good deep dive.

Their new album didn't disappoint either. One of my favorite songs from The Fall of Hearts as well is The Night Subscriber. They are absolutely addicting to listen to
