Chordplay - The Chords Of Rainbow

Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Rainbow. I've had a lot of requests to feature some of Rainbow's music and we've already hit a Three-For-All for Ritchie Blackmore featuring some of his licks, along with a Deep Purple Chordplay lesson hitting some of his chord moves. Needless to say, this Rainbow episode is long overdue, but we're finally focusing on some of their pioneering style and massively influential hard rock music - so here we go!

This episode features plenty of classic tracks, along with some lesser-known "fan favorites." This material includes familiar Rainbow songs such as 'Man On The Silver Mountain' along with some true "deep cuts" with tracks such as 'Rainbow Eyes,' 'Rock Fever,' 'Run With The Wolf,' 'Catch The Rainbow,' and much more.

This lesson also includes a segment from Rainbow's impressive cover of the Yardbirds classic 'Still I'm Sad,' which Rainbow has technically covered twice. The first time it was featured on their self-titled debut from 1975 and the second time in 1995 on the Rainbow album Stranger In Us All. Needless to say, the chord-based melodic intro section from the '95 version of this song is AMAZING, and we're hitting my favorite section of it in this lesson!

If you're already a Rainbow or Ritchie Blackmore fan, then you know what's waiting in this episode, but for those that are new to Rainbow's music and the fretboard wizardry of Mr. Blackmore - this episode is for you, so dive in and have some fun rockin' out with some of these classic hard rock anthems and ideas!
Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Rainbow (and Blackmore) rules! You could easily do a part 2 etc. Kill the King. Stargazer, Gates of Babylon.

appreciate all of your vids... saves me hours of listening over and over to figure out the small intricacies of these different groups. it finally gets me playing them correctly instead of close enough....

Just went to listen to Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and in the comments found someone whose dad bought them that cassette in the 90's when they wanted to learn guitar, and said they still didn't feel like they were as good as they wanted to be. So I gave you a raving review as a guitar instructor (one of my two favorites) and to check out this video in particular.
Thanks for all you Dave! ^-^

Loved Rainbow … saw them live several times from 82-84 … actually got an autograph from him and a picture with him during the straight between the eyes tour … I think it was Frank Marino, Triumph, and Rainbow on the bill in Norman, OK … and then met him and the rest of Deep Purple on the reunion tour in Wichita, KS … we actually stayed at the same hotel … he was pretty reserved but cordial in person … love the lesson and the trip down memory lane … 😎

I have watched alot of content of Ritchie, and i have noticed that he has a good sense of humor, he is a complex person, and to a certain extent he is misunderstood. A funny asshole he is.

Thank you for doing this overview of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Ritchie is all too often overlooked in the pantheon of the Guitar God Greats. Lots of others get more press, but not many had his level of technique, improvisation skills and melodicism. He is a one off.

Wow! And now, only a few hours later, 'Since You've Been Gone' has popped up in another video, the only Rainbow song I'd really known so far - and it turns out it's not even a Rainbow original but a cover of a Russ Ballard song! 😳 😄

It's ridiculous how many classic riffs Ritchie was able to pull out of that same little 3rd fret box. Speed King, Smoke, Highway Star, Silver Mtn, Long Live Rock & Roll. I know there's others I'm forgetting. You could do a whole lesson on just those!
