Nordholm Companies' Construction Manager Josh Buege demonstrates and explains our Climbing Jack System.
"The system is simple and consists of one or more climbing jacks, ekki wood cribbing material, shims, hydraulic power pack with connecting hosing and valves. The climbing jacks are essentially a jack with the rod down, inside of the casing that allows the cribbing or jacking material to be built up under the casing. Nordholm uses jacks that are rated at 55, 150, and 500 metric ton capacity at 6000psi.
The procedure to operate a climbing jack is simple:
1 - Determine the load, the required capacity of the jack, and the set-up location
2 - Make a good foundation, level, and with sufficient load-spread to stay above the deck, or dirt, or whatever your jack is sitting on
3 - Lay a continuous layer of ekki down, center on the jack. Typically 10 sticks make a square pattern.
4 - Jack up one stroke and put stickers with 1/2 inch shim, at a 90-degree angle to the base layer under the outside edges of the jack.
5 - Retract the rod and place the appropriate number of sticks, parallel to the stickers under it.
6 - Now take the next stroke, and continue to the required jack height needed for the job.
The cribbing material that Nordholm uses is milled from ekki or azobe wood which comes from Africa and is generally felt to be the best wood available for jacking use: Its incredibly durable, crush-resistant, as well as strong.
The jacking sticks are milled to 100 x 100 x 1000mm dimensions or roughly 4 x 4 x 40 inches. The weight is 9 kg or roughly 20 lbs per stick and can last 10 years or more in use. Shim material may be steel, hardwood, or plywood depending on how much load we have.
The advantages of this system include:
- Faster jacking times since jacks are always loaded
- No stroke-loss or restacking needed
- Uses about half of the typical cribbing as there is one stack only per jack
- Creates a safety less handling of wood
- Lighter weights to handle
- Less exposure
- No handling of awkward jacks
