Saving Calcutta's Red Light Children | India | Orphan's Promise

These children have seen things no child should see. Their moms are prostitutes, and at night, these children are forced to lay under the bed in their one-room homes while their mothers services clients above them.

THE WHOLE STORY:
The red-light district of Calcutta India is the place of untold suffering the brothels and slums are filled with thousands of children who have little hope of the future outside the sex trade. I am struck by the beautiful little girls I see I want to scoop them up and take them back to my hotel bathe them and dress them in pretty dresses, but I know that won't change things.

These girls and their brothers have seen things no child should see. Thousands of children call this home a different kind of home than you or I could imagine. Seven people live here, this is where the customers are and this is where the children sleep. I'm told there are more than 10,000 prostitutes in Calcutta.

"What's the age of the women who are involved." "In this case, they could range from many ages as young as 11 or 12 and in a lot of cases the parents would have probably sold off their daughters realize, because they have 8, 9, 10 children. They feel if they sell off one daughter, then maybe the other seven or eight will survive. These young girls come in, they get pregnant, and they're having children.

And what happens to the children, when the fetus is aborted, or if the baby is born sometimes they will just kill the baby also. But if the woman grows older then they don't mind her getting pregnant and having a baby because then it's like you're preparing for the next generation of prostitutes.

When I look into the eyes of the women here today it's clear this is not a chosen profession, but a mom will do what it takes to provide for her children. In their eyes I see frustration and anger but mostly a silent resignation this is their lot in life and most likely for their precious daughters as well so Orphans Promise is partnering with Calcutta Mercy Ministries.

We're providing a safe house for these children where they won't be exposed to the sexual activities of their mothers. Education is a big key to change the future for them as well. We'll get them started at a nearby school where they won't have the stigma of being brothel children.

The mothers are embracing this help. These women don't know it yet but we also have plans for them we are working to organize jobs for them so that they can move out of the red-light district. We have some promising projects on the horizon. I'm excited about the provisions I see here at this safe house but still my heart aches for these children, especially these little girls with all they've seen they don't understand normal sexuality and self-image.

It will be a process, but through this orphans promise program they'll receive the guidance they need both psychologically and spiritually. I know there'll be different children when we visit them the next time. As much as I'd love to wash their faces and dress them in pretty dresses, I know only God can wash away the hurt and put them back together on the inside. He has a purpose for each one of them and I'm so glad we can be a part of his plan.
