His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
Joining Europe Day
To celebrate Europe Day, the EU institutions traditionally open their doors to the public in early May. Local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organise a variety of activities and events for all ages.
Each year thousands of people take part in visits, debates, concerts and other activities to mark the day and raise awareness about the EU.
Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the EU is inviting citizens from across Europe and the world to discover it in a safe and mostly virtual way, with physical or hybrid events and visits taking place where sanitary conditions allow it.
Conference on the future of Europe: kick off on 9 May
Mentioned at the beginning of 2019 but postponed due to the health crisis, the Conference on the future of Europe came back to the table last March. On the occasion of the plenary session of the European Parliament, the presidents of the three institutions which will jointly lead the project (Commission, Council, Parliament) signed a joint statement which specifies the broad outlines.
In their speech respectively, David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and Antonio Costa, President of the Council of the European Union, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU, first of all reaffirmed the ambition of the project: to give Europeans “a say in what they expect from the European Union” and “an increased role to (…) shape the future policies and ambitions of the Union”. The conference on the future of Europe presents itself as an open and inclusive form of deliberative democracy. Its objective is to give the citizens of the 27 Member States the opportunity to express what they expect from the European Union.
Events to think about the Europe of tomorrow
The political launch of the Conference is scheduled for Europe Day, May 9, in Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament. For several months, debates, conferences and other events on the future of Europe will be organized in all the member countries of the Union. Despite the health constraints, the European institutions hope that an essential part of the events can be held in the presence of the public.
For urban France, “the Conference on the future of Europe must live and infuse in the territories”
The elected representatives of the big cities, large agglomerations and metropolises, gathered within urban France, expressed, last April, their interest in the Conference on the future of Europe and said they were ready to mobilize fully. to bring the debate to life in the territories and bring the orientations desired by citizens for the European Union.
In order to initiate and lead to a real reflection on Europe by and for the citizens in the territories, Urban France intends to create close working relations between its “Europe” and “Citizen Dialogue” commissions soon to be installed, to continue its cooperation with its partners from the Pôle Joubert (Assembly of Communities of France, National Association of Territorial Poles and Countries and National Federation of Urban Planning Agencies) and strengthen its relations with existing networks at European level, such as the French Association of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (AFCCRE) and Eurocities.
