Very useful and important tips. Though, I'd like to add something, if you don't mind: Just don't look at the histogram and light meter, but look at it and *understand* it. For example: If you want to shoot a silhouette of a person, tree, whatever against the sunset, well, part of your picture will be black eventually - otherwise it wouldn't be a silhouette, you have to reach those shadows. The other way round: If you shoot in a city at night, the street lights probably will be burned out no matter how much you darken the picture. Which makes sense, the lights are just blown out for our eyes as well.

Light meter and histogram are based on mathematical stuff (18% grey or something like that). They are a good starting point, but don't forget the creativity. Sometimes, too bright highlights and/or too deep shadows are essential for a great picture. 🙂

Re: the music, Pierre- you can't please everyone and your music intro reflects your energetic personality, like a great cup of morning coffee! Don't water your style down for a few people who would rather criticize you than do anything original themselves. Be your own person - your growing subscriber list should tell you that you are doing something that people like! I am here for your knowledge that you impart in a refreshingly entertaining style, not for a music video!

Hi Pierre
Thanks for answering my question, I couldn't believe it when I saw the title of this video!
I just started today taking lessons with a local photographer. I decided to spend some money on education, not just gear.
Looking forward to the podcast. Love your music. When I hear the "Oh Yeah" I know it's knowledge time .

In your opinion should I set my camera color space “adobeRGB” from “sRGB”?

I learnt to expose for what I was shooting, back in the film days. That is, take the exposure, for which part of the image you wish see.
Most important when you needed to work out if you needed to use fillin flash or not, or if you wish to make a silhouette, or expose for the background.
I was mostly a simple matter of spot metering on the subject area, and hoping you had exposed on the correct spot, and finding out a week later when you got your film back. :)

Great reminder Pierre! And congrats to 30+ k subs on the channel. I believe you'll be hitting 50k before the year ends :)

Funny cause they said this is the biggest advantage of the evf, what you see is what you get, but i always see everything blown up. I heard there's a brightness setting but never saw it.

Cam display can also mislead when shooting raw because displayed image is a jpeg (made on the fly before shutter press or embedded preview image in RAW file). Spot metering can also mislead if spot doesn’t cover your subject. Follow up vid about AEL would clarify. Vid music is ok — content is more important. I would prefer to see a dog instead of a cat, but any animal can steal a scene 😁. What zebra settings do you use? Some cams, like your Sony, I believe, also have a “meter for highlights” mode. (BTW, my prior comment (have since deleted) showed lined out text for some unknown reason — any ideas what happened?)

I got couple DSLR's and all my photos are exactly what I'm going for. My highlights clip only if I got image with severe dynamic range and blacks clip only if I'm in a cave or smthng. I use histogram and expose according to situation, cuz I can always pull out some shadows in post.

That was great info like that you were specific, went a little fast for me but thanks for sharing your skills

I use the histogram and my camera is still lying to me. I shoot raw but the histogram (and probably the zebras too) only tell you about jpegs. You have to guess at how much data in a raw image is still there to the left and right of the histogram.
