Macron Appoints Gabriel Attal Youngest French Prime Minister
Показать описание
President Emmanuel Macron appointed a 34-year-old ally as France’s prime minister in a bid to bring fresh impetus to his administration just months ahead of European Parliament elections.
Gabriel Attal, whose latest post was education minister, becomes the first out gay man to head the government in France and the youngest to hold the post in modern history. One of his biggest challenges will be to try to contain the growing popularity of the far-right.
In his first speech as prime minister in Paris on Tuesday, Attal vowed to give priority to work and drastically cut red tape for companies. Still, his business agenda came at the end of a list of priorities that included education, health, security and immigration.
“With the president, I’ll have one goal: keep control of our destiny and unleash France’s potential,” he said. “Freeing French potential means continuing to transform our economy.”
A rising star of French politics, he takes on the role after a bruising year for Macron that saw divisive battles over pensions and immigration that tested the president’s ability to push through reforms.
