I'm starting to see Meruem as very Spiritual. He is a force of nature given consciousness who found meaning in empathy. The moment he gained Pouf's ability to feel others emotions all beings could kind of merge their consciousness with his in a way, the wings are a more obvious symbol but the guy would have been a God on Earth coming to wipe away the damned, and we killed him with a metaphor for nuclear fall out. Still, with nen after death working the way it does I think he found true bliss beyond any sort of Heaven in his final moments, his en must have revealed Komugi's feelings in a way even a married couple could never achieve. He would've been like if Gandalf had all the powers of Sauron, his ring and his eye, but decided to lift humanity instead of making them submit. I think we truly lost what Meruem would've become if he didn't die, but he could not become it without realizing his own mortality. He peered into the same void we all do and came out both Stoic and zen, but only self-actualized when he reunited with Komugi and realized that was his life's purpose.

He did not deserve to die imo. He spoke his mind truthfully which most presidents can’t do, he didn’t deny that he would use his power but he said he’d never abuse it. He felt empathy for the weak which is super unlike an ant.
