Really useful, clear explanation. I have been finding it very hard to find a detailed description of how to do this until I found your video. Great advice, thanks.

Thanks now I understand that the bottom of my hedge isn't as full because it doesn't get direct sunlight. You've just filled a gap of general knowledge and I appreciate it

Thank you, thank you for the detailed information. It’s scary to trim back a hedge with all that wood exposed, but it’s the way to go. My landscape designer neighbor did this to her hedge & it grew out beautifully. I’m in the process of using this method to fill out my Ilex hedge. This was so helpful. 👏👏👏👏👏

Great video mate. I'm just an amateur, but did work as a gardener/lawnmower for a couple of years when my wife was unwell. I have a bit of OCD when it comes to hedges, and like to keep them neat and tidy. But it was good advertising, as people would see the finished job and get my number. The hadest thing for me was having to convince the clients that their hedges needed a severe cut back. They just couldn't understand that their hedges were getting heavily wooded and starting to turn into trees! After being cut back they would be horrified at the end result! But all those hedges grew back . Even now my wife absolute hates it when I do a hard prune on our gardens and hedges.

Many thanks for your step by step video -i am not a gardener and seam to be more a professional weed grower than anything else. Hopefully, your step by step video will give me the confidence to reduce a very wide hedge that we have got. Not really looking forward to it as i have never have had to cut one back so hard and remove so much dead in parts.

THANK you....I have been ARGUING so much with my husband about this. He totally thinks I have been doing it wrong, yet without even knowing, this is what I have been doing for the most part. HE THINKS we are ONLY supposed to trim the leaves and only a little bit....so now our hedges are way over our sidewalk!!! He yelled at me when I was doing it this way because he said, "you're making all the wood show through" said, " You have to, cause it's all dead" blah blah and blah. So here we are a few years later and my hedges are hanging way over our WALKWAY into our new home :(

Great video - thanks!!! Currently trying to thin out a hedge at my mother in law's. Although im starting to think its a collection of various trees that have just morphed together, rather than an actual hedge.

Am I the only person that uses hedgecutters and hedge trimmers? Quite different machines! I do use secateurs and loppers too, for finishing touches!

When is the best time of the year to do this? I have a sheenas gold hedge contouring my driveway up to the front door, and it's quite overgrown - I need to drop its overall height about 20cm but then also push it back off the footpath by about 20 - 30cm as well. Being in Brisbane I suspect I should wait until we're past summer?

Hi, can this be done in winter time, January, or do I have to wait until march and onwards. Thanks

Would it the plant or side of the hedge dry if it was a conifer type hedge? My neighbour has one at the front of the house next to mine and and it blocks my morning light too into my living room in the morning as it's about 2-3 meters tall! Any advice?
