Staten Island has about half a million people, but they describe it as a "sleepy enclave". Some neighborhoods on SI (like the Cedar Grove area of the New Dorp Beach neighborhood that was badly hit in the storm) ARE sleepy enclaves, but it's a pretty large, diverse place, home to urban, suburban, and even some areas that are semi-rural. SI's population would mark it as a large city anywhere else in the USA, but because it's part of NYC, they characterize it as sleepy little town.

These scenes are reminiscent of what we witnessed here in Japan last year. My heart goes out to all who have had their lives disrupted by this incredibly destructive storm. Most sadly of course, I extend my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

I live here. And my young friend, very young, only 11, had to be rescued by a boat.

Wow, Katrina and New Orlean in 2005 to Sandy and NJ/NY in 2012!?
What eerie similarity. Can't believe this has happened in the city where I called home.
My prayers to the ones who lost their love ones and who are unfortunate.
My God bless you all.

No time to to start charity. Most Americans can't understand others pain.

This is my area of Midland Beach and Ocean Breeze... decimated and a ghost town still and continuing.

This is tragic. Are they getting help?

I want to help so bad, but living in California has cut me low on that. I hate being so far away right now.

They are doing what they are trained to do the first thing after a hurricane is to drive around the nieghborhoods and WRITE Reports and draw maps of the area that they have been in BUT they are waiting until some VIP FEMA hot shot to tell them to go to a wearhouse to pick up food, water and hot drinks (Coffee) to hand out to a four block area miles away from the nieghbor that they was in for days before
