Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,470 m.
It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda.
Nyiragongo's lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history.

Το όρος Νιραγκόνγκο βρίσκεται στα ανατολικά άκρα της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας του Κονγκό, δίπλα από τα σύνορα με τη Ρουάντα.
Το Νιραγκόνγκο είναι ένα από τα πιο ενεργά ηφαίστεια του πλανήτη.
Στη βάση του ηφαιστείου, σε απόσταση 13 με 18 χιλιόμετρα νότια αυτού, βρίσκεται η πόλη Γκόμα, στις όχθες της λίμνης Κίβου. Δύο μεγάλες εκρήξεις του Νιραγκόνγκο, το 1977 και το 2002, δημιούργησαν καταστροφές στην πόλη. Στην έκρηξη του 2002, το 40% της Γκόμα καλύφθηκε από λάβα ενώ 245 κάτοικοι έχασαν τη ζωή τους.
