“Free health care for everyone!!!” It’s all the rage, but is it actually feasible?

On this episode of Common Sense Soapbox, Bubble Man makes a plea for universalized, free health care from his hospital bed. As Seamus explains, Bubble Man’s dreams are only possible in… well… a bubble.

It's pretty cool watching Ron and Sarah's child go from a newborn baby in the overpopulation video three years ago to a toddler who can stand and walk in this one.

People don't need to leave California to make us suffer. California's existence alone makes me suffer mental anguish.

Not to mention that a lot of corporations dislike the free market, and encourage these practices to artificially drive up prive and limit competition that would force them to adopt competitive policies.

"If you love govt control so much, why did you leave california?"
"TO MAKE YOU
Most honest answer to that question ever. And the only sensible answer as to why the people that openly hate America don't GTFO of a place they hate so much.

"Whyd you leave California?" That was way too accurate

In Germany you are literally forbidden from switching to private if you dont earn enough
It is literally a reserved priviledge for rich people

As a Brit, I can confirm it's true. With the shambles the NHS is in, more people would prefer to go to private health care if they could afford it.

I'm Canadian and have worked in the healthcare system for over a decade. Trust me when I say, it's lazy, inefficient, bloated, corrupt and sucks.
Since it's single payer, there's no competition to force them to be better. We pay crazy prices for materials too. The service is also horrible.

A German doctor here. I get half of my income from private insurance companies despite only around 20% of my patients being privately insured. The public insurance companies only pay 60% of the work I do. The privately insured subsidize all the publicly insured.

My wife and I were planning to retire at her home in the Philippines. After we got married she spent one year visiting US hospitals and said screw that we're staying here forever. Her exact words were "When you're old in the US at least they TRY to keep you alive!"

General rule of thumb: if a free market isn't correcting itself, make sure that the government doesn't have their meaty fingers on the scale.

People of California, you do not have to leave Cali to make me suffer. All who embrace ignorance make the entire world suffer regardless of their geographical location, so save yourself the trouble, you are doing a great job of making the world a sh!ttier place by just staying where you are.

"We want free Healthcare for everyone
"We want open borders, let everyone in"
"We want everyone to have access to Trans surgeries"

I don't need to be any sort of economist to see how those three things would combine to cause an utter clusterfuck.

As someone who has received care in a government ran medical facility (VA), having the government control the medical system is a bad idea. Regulate for safety, fine. Run the system, absolute no!

"The health care is in shambles, what can we do?"
"How about we put it all in absolute control of the government, thus making sure any failings will affect entire system not just one location, vastly increase the costs of services as monopolies always do, add unnecessary layers of administration further increasing costs of it all"
"Brilliant, but... Wouldn't we then be responsible for providing the best care possible? Isn't that hard?"
"Of course not, don't be daft. Even if they don't like it, what are they gonna do, go to the competition?"

I think you missed how a large part of that estimated cost is straight up institutionalized fraud. The price they charge insurance isn't the real price, it's what they say to get the real cost out of them.

This reminds me of a conversation I once saw while working in a bar in Florida, between a collage student and a visiting Canadian;

Student; "I really want to move to (some town in Canada that I never heard of, but near Toronto)."

Canadian; "Wait, I use to live there, that place is a shit hole."

"No, all the brochures-"

"You mean 'government propaganda'? Like any city will show that they are a shit hole."

"Well, Canada itself would be better."

"How? It's the same as here."

"No, not really, you only 'now' got your first serial killer."

"What? No, we've had serial killers, it's just the government tries to keep that under wraps."

"Well, it's not like that there."

How in the Unholy Hell are you going to tell someone a country that they live in, 'isn't like that there'?

Anyone who has experienced socialized healthcare knows that the wait time alone to get service can often kill. And you pay through the nose in taxes to have that government healthcare.

Most people would agree that monopolies are bad. Which is why it confuses me that people want the government to take over our healthcare system. Anything the government exclusively controls is effectively a monopoly by law. There is no competition, so there is no desire to improve the system. That's why people stuck with government healthcare usually have long wait times to see a doctor or are denied coverage for one reason or another.

"Why can't this country have free stuff?"
1: Because it's not free, it's paid for with the tax on milk, gas and food.
2: Because politician must overfeed themselved and their staffers with your money before they give anything back.
3: Because industries the goverment controls or tampers with tend to higher prices in private spaces and lower quality in the public ones.
4: Healthcare should be not a right nor a privilege, it should be, simply put, a service, like your car's repair shop is.
