Portugal sim activated! Lisbon was love at first sight

Portugal sim activated! Lisbon was love at first sight. Or should I say second? I road-tripped the Algarve about 7 years ago but I only had a quick pit stop in Lisbon. Im happy to say that this time around I really dug deep into this vibrant city. I unexpectedly had about 12 free days after a recent trip(soon come) to explore any European destination. From Italy to Paris, my mind was all over the map. But then, out of the blue, Portugal popped into my head. And boy, am I grateful I followed that little voice! The city (re)captivated me in less than 24 hours. I have so much to share but first…
5 things I want you to know before going to Lisbon:
I’ll keep it real and say that Lisbon is top 3 friendliest cities in Europe. While you should definitely learn some basic phrases, many Portuguese speak English and they’re always happy to showcase their country and help out where needed.
Lisbon is a city of seven hills and those hills are NO JOKE! Not to mention the uneven cobblestone streets. You will dang near need to scale mountains to get from one site to the next but it’s so worth it! I was tripped and stubbed my toes more times than I can count so rock your most comfortable shoes!
At the same time, Lisbon is a very walkable city. You will definitely surpass your 10k steps a day: You can easily get around on foot, or take the public transportation system, which is super efficient and affordable. Also, Ubers are superrrrrrr cheap!
While no city is completely safe, Lisbon is a relatively safe European city. . Let me just say that I felt solo and didn’t feel the need to look over my shoulder! As with any big city, it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to prevent pickpocketing.
Lisbon is a rather affordable city in comparison to say Paris or Italy. While Lisbon has certainly grown in popularity, you can still eat, drink, and stay in Lisbon for much less than in other major European cities.
Ever been to Portugal or Lisbon? What did you think? If you’ve been to Portugal along with other European cities, how would you compare the two?
