Bes the Guardian God in Ancient Egyptian Religion | Hymn to Bes

Bes is one of the most distinctive and beloved deities in ancient Egyptian religion, known for his protective, joyful, and fiercely loyal nature. Unlike the typical slender, graceful forms of other Egyptian gods, Bes is depicted as a squat, dwarf-like figure with leonine features, protruding tongue, bowed legs, and often a plumed headdress. His image is usually frontal—a rare artistic convention in Egyptian art—emphasizing his watchful, confrontational stance against evil. Bes was primarily a household deity, associated with music, dance, sexuality, fertility, and, most importantly, protection, especially of women and children. He was invoked during childbirth to ward off malevolent spirits and ensure safe delivery, often appearing on headrests, amulets, cosmetic containers, and walls of private homes. Despite his comedic and mischievous appearance, Bes held a serious role as a guardian against chaos and misfortune, scaring away demons and serpents with loud noises, music, and his fearsome visage. Over time, he became a widely adored figure beyond Egypt, influencing religious traditions in Nubia and the Mediterranean. Bes’s enduring popularity reflects the ancient Egyptians’ deep appreciation for both the joys and vulnerabilities of everyday life, where divine protection was seen not only in majestic temples but also in the laughter and security of the home.

The Bes tribe of Egypt did exist....They were provoked by Shishak to fight in another world....They left women, children, and old men at the foot of Mt. Ineri on Flores Island in a fleet from Tire, and headed north through Yap Island. They were defeated in a battle at Mt. Koya and were annihilated, but several people remained. Through artificial insemination, we left descendants with local women until today.... 😄
