Ostwald's viscometer is a traditional viscometer to measure the viscosity of a liquid. It is a U-shaped glass tube. In one arm, the bulb A is connected with a fine capillary. The lower end of capillary is connected with a U-tube provided with a bulb B in the second arm. The bulb is necessary to maintain the hydrostatic pressure during flow of liquid. Through the capillary tube, the liquid flows with measurable speed. There are two marks C and D above and below the bulb A. The liquid flows under its own weight.

I understood it from your video, more than I did from the lab in the university ...
Big THANKS :)

Thanks to Amrita Lab for providing  audio visual demo  for  HOW TO MEASURE VISCOSITY using U-Type Ostwald Viscometer . The English voice was very clear and easily understandable. It is simple but very useful tool  with very nominal cost and effort.  I must appreciate for the kind effort of Amrita Lab. Millions of students and researchers will be benefited from  this .

@rahulkalwade you can measure it by poise or stoke depending on the equation you may use ..
if u want it in poise then : viscosity = k*t*density
in stoke : viscosity = k*t
k is the instrumental constant, which you can eliminate by knowing the viscosity of a liquid and the calculate the viscosity of the unknown by a ratio ..
hope you understand though it's kinda late :)

I am some confused, please help
you called n2 as the absolute viscosity of the liquid. I knew that the capillary tube is to measure the kinematic viscosity not absolute. also, I found some article about the Ostwald's viscometer, and in such article they represented the n2 as the viscosity coefficient not as the absolute viscosity, could you please illustrate or send me a link to understand what is actually the n2 refers to? and what is definitely the viscosity coefficient ? thanks

i like your process..but unit is necessary to determine viscosity... which one unit is taken about it?

If I am doing a test with oils, how much oil do you think I'll need to complete a viscosity test?
