My guess is that she was using naturally translucent acrylic paints on the gel plate.

Apparently, National Geographic magazines use a highly pigmented ink, on clay coated pages, that’s why the ink dissolves when you apply CitraSolv to them. I’m guessing that may also be the reason that they work well with the sandpaper technique. I have made papers using CitraSolv by following Froyle’s YouTube

My goodness! I was thinking this technique was a hot Mess UNTIL you started the collage and it all came together. Love the end results! Thanks for the tutorial.

Watching you play and experiment with paper while collaging was fun. Thanks!

Thanks for reminding me about all the Nat Geos I have. Clay based inks are wonderful to play with. Citrasolve is so messy, but this I could do! Love the way you just play with your supplies!

Darcy, I love what you’ve done! Sanding over the gel printed paper is brilliant and I can’t wait to try that as well.

I think you will like how the Nat Geos react to sanding. A lot of the pages with warmer tones expose a wonderful warm neutral instead of white after sanding. I am also curious to try sanding other mags and books.

I ended up not gel printing my sanded pages during the retreat, but I did add some to the same junk journal I gifted everyone. I’ll upload a flip through to IG soon and let you know. I gave all my extra sanded pages to Patricia from P&M, and she immediately sanded a few extra Nat Geo pages I had. Like another commenter said above, this technique is much easier than altering with Citrasolve. The results are vastly different, and I like them both. Might need to try sanding citrasolved pages too! Ha.

Stay in touch! ❤ Bonnie
