CARDASSIAN: Cultural Index

The villainous serpentine species of star trek! But is there more to them than the arrogant, callous, xenophobic shell they project? Well... kind of. But not much more.
More so than most other cookie cutter races in Scifi, the Cardassians seem a product of their culture far more than just bland stereotypes of "the smart aliens" or the "warrior alien" and so on.

This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

Everyone who loves the Cardassians should read "A Stitch In Time" by Andrew Robinson. It's an autobiography of Garak in the form of letters to Dr. Bashir that Garak writes while helping rebuild Cardassia after the Dominion War, and it's excellent!

The Cardassians are possibly one of the most nuanced alien races in Trek, perhaps even more so than the Klingons.

Garak made the Cardassians interesting.

I imagine if you managed to befriend a Cardassian, you would have a friend for life.

I once had a dream about a Cardassian. It was measuring somebody for some reason and then Major Kira said, "Is that what you Cardassians do now? Measure people?" and then the Cardassian said (in Quark's voice for some reason, dream logic :/) "No, just this one."

Cardassians are my faves too! I have loved reading Una McCormack's books on Cardassian society. "The Never Ending Sacrifice" picked up where Rugal Pa'Dar left off when he left DS9 to live with his biological father and ends after the Dominion War, and "The Crimson Shadow" is a great Garak book, rife with all types of Cardassian messiness.

I'm probably going to get flak for this but. The Cardassians are better villains than the Romulans.

I'm sure that Garak (who would never, as a mere tailor, aspire to Obsidian Heights) will help 'guide' Cardassia towards being the more noble people of his ideals...

It'll never not be hilarious that the Ferengi so bombed as villains that the TNG writer's room had to come up with the Cardassians.

I wish the Cardassians had their own show before and after the war.

I just realised that The Enigma Tales is extremely similar to a book/play I had to read in English class as a kid.
"An Inspector Calls" is also a murder mystery, where a family is visited by a police inspector, and throughout the length of the story, you find out that each family member was guilty of something, and all of which were connected to the murder victim.

Imagine a courtroom battle with the opposing sides being represented by a Cardassian and the other a Ferangi.

Plus, you get a Cardassian woman angry into a heated argument; she'll jump your bones.

The stalemate could be an indicator of their strategy skills. It could also be an indicator of the Federation’s motive of seeking peace and negotiation, while having moral limits that the Cardassians lack.
