No! Don't defer residency. Do it now; the year will pass without you knowing it. Defer the student loan payment, cos you're technically not done with school. Going to work and then back to any type of school is never a good idea... especially once life starts happening.

NO do the residency NOW
Dave doesn't really know some intricacies of healthcare jobs

I hope Kasey takes their advice with a grain of salt. Dave and Rachel may know pharmacists, but they aren't in the field and thus should really not be giving career advice. If the residency is needed, and it's only for a year, do it.

I don’t think they have any knowledge of how the pharmacy world works. At the most, she is losing the 70-80 k in the first year in order to get the job she wants. Dave and Rachel are only looking at the money and not job satisfaction for the rest of her life. People are either retail or hospital they don’t usually jump back and forth. If you start with retail it is really hard to get into hospital. It is not easy to get accepted into a residency program. Hats off to her. The advice they gave her is really short sighted.

I disagree. I think she’s doing the right decision. It doesn’t make any sense to not do the resistancy. She’s fine keep it up and follow your path

I’m a big Dave Ramsey philosophy fan but I don’t think they understand the trajectory of her career.

With that amount of debt, whats another year. Get the residency done, then hop into that higher salary with a career you wanted with full force.

Never heard of delaying a residency or the likelihood of acceptance coming from a Walgreens/CVS background. Be careful and don’t destroy your hospital prospects to make $70, 000

She never even asked a question. Dave asked all the questions and then beat her up about a topic he knows nothing about. Rachel repeats her dad and the the call is over. I wonder what she was going to ask.

Waiting on pursuing the residency can be seriously detrimental to obtaining one. And with the direction that things are headed, more and more employers are going to look for residency trained professionals, even in the retail and community sectors. 3 years is not going to be enough to pay down the entirety of her loans. So we are looking at a >3 year gap from completing schooling to reapplying to residency (which she would have broken the contract and burned bridges at that point as well). There are intricacies in every field and while I understand where they are coming from, dealing with residency and the match is more than simple arithmetic.

I see lot of beans and rice in her future.

It’s only one year of low pay. Then she’ll have the job she wants and a big shovel. Don’t listen to Dave on this one

Dave...they can't do these tests virtually. You know how strict these testing centers are for these exams to make sure you don't cheat? You're killing me with how much you don't know about these things.

Wrong on this one. Go with the residency

I don't agree with Dave and Rachel's advice here. If it's just one more year of work and debt, and then she's qualified to make that six figure salary she mentioned, the caller should just put her head down and do it. Live frugally and start the baby steps after graduation, staying on that college student beans & rice quality of living. Don't put your dream on hold soooo close to the finish line because NOW you're worried about the debt, lol.

does anybody else hate when rachel gives her two cents on situations like these? she has no idea what it’s like to have a cent of debt. her undergraduate was paid for and she didn’t go to grad school, she had a cushy job set up for her and never had to search for one, she has absolutely no authority or experience with these situations. it’s honestly offensive to listen to her pretend she knows what she’s talking about. her privilege is insane, and she doesn’t have the subtlety or respect dave does when he’s talking to real people who are really struggling.
