As somebody who just got out of 8th grade, I found the movie hella relatable. A lot of people have been saying that the movie wasn't relatable to them because 8th grade wasn't that bad for them and I agree; it wasn't so bad for me either. I think that the movie isn't just about 8th grade, it's about the whole middle school experience specifically in the social media age.
Go watch this movie if you haven't, it's great, to me at least.

For those who haven't - check out Bo Burnham's What. It's a free special available on YouTube, and showed very early on that he's an immense talent with huge range. I'm glad he's gone on to write more sensitive, subtle material because even his goofiest performances have a lot of nuance to them. Cannot wait to check this out.

I’m glad I went through middle school and high school before smartphones and social media became part of everyday life.

The main girl is so relatable. I love how it shows her desire to let her personality out, but struggles because her insecurities are holding her back. It seems so genuine and realistic. Very heart warming!

As an ex geek outsider kid this DESTROYED me emotionally. I cried so many times Iost count. The fact this young lady & movie is not nominated for a comedy oscar is a total travesty. My favourite movie of the year bar none.

obviously alot of ppl didnt like the movie but i feel like it really touches your heart when you have gone through the kind of things kayla did in the film yourself - the panic attacks, the manipulation, being really awkward and unlikeable to everyone else around you, etc ... these are all things i went thru in 8th grade and films dont always have the follow a strict up, down, up and end. it was a satisfying ending.

So many people don’t like the movie because they don’t fucking get it.

I really really loved this film.
I wouldn’t have mind it getting an Oscar nod.
It was so intense at times and I found myself on the edge of my seat because I just wanted things to work out for Kayla so bad.

By the way, she is making that Jar of water look so delicious,
and I hate drinking water.

Ah the middle school years.
Movie was unexpectedly great, comedy/drama was nicely done. 8/10

Eighth Grade for me was 1971. High tech was a LCD calculator that plugged in the wall and an electric typewriter. And postcards.

Don’t know how you can say that when Donald Glover and Atlanta exists

Oh, Gabe. Will Kayla and Olivia be BFFs or will Olivia's friend poison the well? Are all kids this nervous/anxious? I liked it quite a lot. My main complaint is the music. It was too loud, intrusive and rarely fit the scene IMO. I also didn't buy the absence of the mother. I hope adolescence will be easier for my nieces. Thankfully, it was less creepy than The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015).
