Biggest advantage I've found for the crossbow so far is that ability to queue up a special arrow and then put it back on my back before entering a new room. That way I can lead with axe and quickly switch to a special crossbow shot when things heat up. I'm still better with the bow [for now] but that "one in the chamber" crossbow advantage can be a life saver.
