I think making or understanding puns are actually smart. wordplay. especially when its really done neatly and discreetly

That said, making a proper pun requires an extremely keen knowledge of the vernacular and grammar of the language. As someone once said to me many decades ago, "you can truly speak a foreign language when you can make a pun"

I admire puns. They take a certain linguistic genius to quickly think of a relevant word and fit it into a sentence where it makes sense.
