Marriage takes time and patience when you or your partner decide whether you're both ready or not; it should not be forced immediately by your parents. If your parents don't like your boyfriend/girlfriend, then it's their loss, your gain. (They have zero clue on what they're missing out on). If you love your partner, then cherish the moments with him/her, as long as they treat you right and make you happy. Happiness is what matters for life.

Natalie's story resonates so much with me since the ex of my friend, who broke up with my friend just last month, was exactly the same type of girl - outwardly trying to make an independent decision regarding her choice of partner (which was outwardly respected by her parents), but actually using pretty much the same set of expectations her parents use to judge my friend as a boyfriend/future husband, i.e. whether he's a professional (doctor, lawyer, etc.), can spend a copious amount of money on things that aren't really necessary (super nice clothes, lavish meals at fancy restaurants, Rolex/Cartier watches, etc.) and eventually broke up with my friend because he couldn't meet their expectations (what made it worse was that according to my friend, his ex's parents kept mentioning how successful their friends' or acquaintances' sons are whenever they invited him over for dinner, and thus passively-aggressively implying to their daughter that my friend was not earning "enough" even though my friend earns a respectable near-six figure salary and made my friend felt inferior). I guess the moral of Natalie's story is that unless the girl has a very different mindset / belief deep down from her parents, she will still eventually drift towards her parents' thinking and beliefs regardless of how she presented herself otherwise.

Feel real bad for my friend though, he was absolutely a nice and talented guy who's been dumped just because his spending habits cannot match the lavishness of his ex and her family's. Hope he can get over with this toxic ex and her family really soon.
