The painting was done in 1920, around the time women were getting the right to vote in certain places in the world. Maybe the groom wanted to celebrate the fact the bride actually chose him of her own free will and wanted to immortalize that singular moment with a painting? Quite frankly it's giving off only good vibes to me.

To be honest, compared to mamy paintings depicting unequal or foeced weddings, this one gives me good vibes 😁 The bride looks serene, calm but happy, maybe because women had higher standards upon them to seem collected, neat and well put at all times, the groom though 😂 he looks super happy and almost in disbelief, maybe like "oh god she really is my wife now?? She with me??"

All I know is that the bride looks confident while signing those papers, perhaps a powerful stance that she truly chose this marriage?

I think you’re reading way too much into it. Look at the forced Russian bride paintings. Now that’s forced

They might be watching her sign the register because IT IS THE LEGITIMIZING ACT OF THE MARRIAGE AND ENSURES THEIR FUTURE IN REGARD TO MONEY, STATUS, CITIZENSHIP, AND CHILDREN'S SECURITY. She may be coming with a dowry, but now she will share in everything he earns and owns. He looks happy and proud; I wouldn't speculate slander. Then again, art has many opinions.

The way the painting makes you focus on the bride and the light shines on her too is captivating. I'd say this video is a lovely interpretation of the painting

Okay so the painting has no hidden meaning, the artist liked painting important moments in people life (such as a wedding) . Here we can see that the tradition countinues:the white dress and signing, even in today's time.
But the look of the groom and the officant grabbed my attention that is why I made that question

What do I notice about the painting? Her gown is so beautiful! ❤

Maybe it’s a sign of her enduring and wild nature. She’s graceful, like the calm before the storm

I think it's just a beautifully painted picture of a bride signing her new name to the registrar. The artist is very talented. It looks very realistic!

She's giving boss. Her expression, confident and purposeful. It looks like she knows whats shes doing, her husband and priest a bit intimidated and the public speaking her back because she chosed for herself!!

I love this art piece it gives off kinda empowering feeling, most wedding art pieces reflects the disparity of a child bride but this shows how bride is feeling empowering that she gets to choose her future with an age appropriate lover and with her families support ❤️

I think this is an exiting moment, since it is the first time officially her name with his last name. I think the husband wants to know what it looks like and the officiant is checking everything is alright since what else should he be doing ?

Straight could be that he’s seeing how crazy her handwriting looks

Any short featuring an Edmund Blair Leighton painting is a joy to watch.

The couple genuinely looks so good! Compared to that painting titled The Unequal Marriage, I believe, this looks really wholesome to me..

But why is no one talking about lady behind the bride with desperation in her eyes

i think the officiant is just watching so that he can be an impartial witness if the marriage is ever legally contested. the groom looks so eager, like he’s ready for it to be official and to be her husband. the bride looks so calm and confident like she’s pleased with what she is doing.

But isn't it weird the bride isn't exactly smiling? And the little girl holding the bouquet clearly gives off a weird expression
