Orion - a brief tour

Orion is a classic constellation. From ancient egypt to the ancient greeks to the vikings - Orion has been both a point of reference and of myth.

When you next look up at the night sky in autumn and winter, see if you cannot find Orion - and try and grasp what beuty and wonders you are really looking at. It is so much more than tiny spekcs of twinkling lights. In this video I'm trying to give a brief description of some of what you would be looking at. It is my hope that it will spark some interrest.

The night sky is so much more interresting when you know something about what you're looking at.

When my mother was dying I used to look up and see theses three stars. I don't know anything about the sky but they were there night after night. It was very evocative and they will always remind me of her. Rest in peace Mam.

music when combined with science feels like, taking your soul to the vastness of space, then to a place thats bigger as the universe - feels like heaven 😭

I first saw this video when I was 7 years old, watching it again after so many years floods my mind with memories of how much I wanted to study every star in in the sky back then. It honestly, makes me regret about working in this crazily overated society, I'm 19 now and watching this video suddenly reignited my passion for looking up in a dark void and seeing light; Especially, in the hemisphere where Orion lies.
Thanks Michael for making this video possible.

the background music really helps us like we are floating inside those stars while the visuals surf through them

There is a reason Orion is the most famous of all constellations. It is just so identifiable, and has so much to offer especially to beginners like me. Two of the brightest stars in the sky and two of the most amazing nebula all of which are so easy to find. Plus the belt points to Pleiades and Sirius, both of which are amazing in them self but are also good starting points to find other DSO's. So essentially Orion becomes a road map for newbies like me.

I'm glad you liked my little video - and thank you for the video response of a beautiful Orions belt with Betelgeuse and Rigel clearly visible. You are more than welcome to translate the video into any language you wish. I hold no copyright claims to this - it was always meant as an educational video - and as such should be spread as much as possible. If translating it helps educate a few more, that's even better. I only ask that you keep it true to the wording and meaning of the original. :)

One of the best visual tours of my favorite constellation. Seeing the orion nebula for the very first time a few days ago brings new meaning to what I saw in this video. Beautiful presentation and wonderful explanations. Thanks for giving some meaning of the skies to this beginner astronomer!

People are always saying they wonder what it would be like to go back in time. You look up at the night sky. Some of the things you are seeing are light from hundreds of years ago, just now getting here. It really is hard to

I knew about all of this before I even watched because I love the Orion constellation. Still, this is the best version/video about Orion on the internet. Everybody can understand and scale this to size so our brain can comprehend. Very well done.

In greek mythology Orion was a gigantic, supernaturally strong hunter of ancient times. One myth recounts Gaia's rage at Orion, who dared to say that he would kill every animal on the planet. The angry goddess tried to dispatch Orion with a scorpion. This is given as the reason that the constellations of Scorpius and Orion are never in the sky at the same time. However, Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, revived Orion with an antidote. This is said to be the reason that the constellation of Ophiuchus stands midway between the Scorpion and the Hunter in the sky.
