It always seems like when a new generation of consoles comes out, there are ALWAYS problems. The companies always seem unprepared. To me, it’s never worth the hurdles you have to jump over to get one on launch day.

All this makes me happy I am the old gamer who waits for a couple years in a console life cycle to get a new console. I hope those who want on get one.

They make enough. Problem is scalpers. Look at offer up and ebay. Hundreds of consoles being resold

They do lottery’s in Japan for preorders. So everyone who wants a console gets a ticket, numbers are drawn, and those selected get to preorder.

Me personally. I am in no rush to get one. I have had so many console release systems going back to the N64 and honestly the majority all had problems soon after I got them home and up and running. But that's just me.

You’re right, the supply demand argument only works if Sony was the one profiting from some asshole selling a ps5 online for $1, 500. Right now they have no incentive to purposefully short supply, if that’s what they’re doing

TSMC can only produce a certain number of processors for all companys who contracted them. Thats why there is a shortage.

There are only so many electronic components especially for new tech, company’s also have to compete with other company’s to receive more parts, for example certain chips for one an LG phone might be short shipped because they are going to Apple instead. This creates manufacturing challenges, but is mostly common with newer technologies since parts are in high demand

Devil went down to Georgia he was looking for a PS5. He was in a bind at the back of the line, lookin for the one with the drive...

How to avoid this send out emails allowing you to register and save a ps5/xbox. Samsung does it all the time they send out emails when the latest phone will be coming out and they let you reserve a spot before it goes live on retail websites. That way it gives them a rough estimate of how many units to get ready for shipment.

Who's still preordering these systems? There are no day 1 blockbusters. Plus they always put out a slimmer, better version a year late for less $.

I fully admit working at GS made it much easier to get preorders for both systems in store, but I have worked on being able to afford these consoles since June by getting the funds to buy multiple boxes of the Magic The Gathering Double Masters reprint set in August, then selling those cards to have just over $700 set aside for the consoles, plus $125 in GS reward certificates to redeem, plus potentially a PS4 Pro to trade in to cover what's left.

I don't know what I think but I've seen the effect shorting the market has. When I first started at my store we had service coupons which were discounted 25% that was the deal offered twice per year. The disclaimer was "While Supplies Last". They sent me 300 coupons and I sold out. I told every customer after that we ran out of supply. Later I found out I could have just ordered more! But I saw the effect this had, like ppl trying to get their kid that limited item for their kid for Christmas back in the 90s. Now each time we offer that special ppl will buy multiples just for fear supplies will run out. I dont know how that fits here exactly but felt that to be comparable.

I got both pre-ordered for pickup at launch...
Super excited for both for sure.

There’s likely shortages in the supply chain in order to produce consoles in a manner that would be financially viable, especially with the chips. This happens all of the time with new phone releases. They eventually get enough product covered a few months after launch when sales steady out. Even with the pandemic, I’m sure both consoles will be readily available a few months or so after the initial launch.

Gosh such a cool story Jay :) When Ps5 first released I didn't even think it would be hard to get :(

No Sony said preorders were going to be the following day. And then retailers just went ahead and started doing it.
