Geez, that first movement is a muthafolker: virtuoso double-stops in the violins, tubas leap to the treble clef, horns go up to high C. Every part is the most difficult thing I've seen written. This 'Frisco orchestra nailed it and deserves cheers and a fat pension.

Man ive heard recordings and renditions (played one as well) of that opening, but i never knew there were flutes underlying those stabs. Thanks for making the score accessible to people like me who would have otherwise never known the cool details of this piece

13:32 to 15:21. I have no words to describe this particular section. John Adams is special.

The first few minutes of this piece, as well as most of 11:30 to the end of the first movement, are easily some of the greatest music of any kind or genre from the second half of the 20th century, maybe even the whole century

The first movement in concept, instrumentation and effect is a total lift straight out of a symphony by Philip Glass!

I created an entire movie in my mind. Please Mr. Adams, will you give me the rights? How much?

I'm not a wind player but some of those never ending quasi-ostinato lines for the winds in the third movement look kind of impossible to play. No chance to breathe?! I'd love to hear what a flautist / wind player thinks. Absolutely love the texture it creates though.

This is clearly a live perfornance. Do you know the date and venue?

John Adams has made it abundantly clear he thinks he's the greatest living composer. Unfortunately he's not even the greatest living composer called John Adams.
