Supply chain issues threaten consumers and businesses

A global traffic jam of ships carrying goods to major U.S. ports is affecting consumers and businesses, and some experts say the disruption will continue deep into 2022. Peter Tirschwell, the vice president for maritime and trade at IHS Markit, joins CBSN's Elaine Quijano to discuss the supply chain woes.

If your buisiness plan is to have all your products manufactured by the cheapest available overseas source and shipped on a just in time basis to eliminate inventory costs you have made some anti-laber decisions and don't deserve any taxpayer help.

You can't divert a current ship sitting on the West coast to to port at Florida since there are a lot of other concerns that come up. The ship would need to re-fuel to make that long trip and then it would also have to re-fuel again to return top it's origin which is an even longer trip back. Don't forget it also would need to return back with empty containers....which the Florida port may or may not have. They would have have to go through the panama pay it's tolls...twice...These problems would just be on the shipping company. The other major problem now lies customer of the containers. They already had a congested streamline from the West coast port...now they have to figure out how to get there containers from the other side of the by there way there is a trucking and labor shortage...that needs to be considered while figuring that out as well. I also have heard of some fuel shortages for trucks?? Maybe someone else can confirm that.

This crisis started in Feb and no one was accountable. How many months? No one got sacked? Don't blame the pandemic. Problems are to be solved, if not what is the point of having a govt?

You know I think I know how we can fix this, put out mandates all over the United States that people take a shot that they don’t want or they get fired from their jobs; bringing the needed hands to get the jobs done across the United States to a fraction of what it used to be that should fix it.

I am 10 years inter state truck driver in the Midwest/south. Make the ships to make 2 stops. First stop in California ports and the second stop in any of gulf of mexico ports through Panama canal. No truck driver will spend his weekend in california. We are humans too. So, USA department of transportation get the ships to the south. Plenty of truck drivers in the south/midwest regions but will not drive to California. It is 2 weeks trip.

China already use AI in their supply chain, including containers supply chain. US, being the self acclaimed the most technological country, still depends on old fashioned way of doing things in many ways, except in financial sector. They need the most sophisticated, unscrupulous method to exploit in the financial mkt.
