Global Britain’s Brexit Delusion

preview_player

With the United States in retreat, Russia belligerent, and China ascendant, there’s never been a better time for Britain to engage globally. But as the government consumes itself with untying the Gordian knot of Brexit, there is unfortunately little interest for what is happening beyond the country’s borders.

** Featuring Mark Malloch-Brown, a former UN Deputy Secretary-General and British cabinet minister.

I really have to disagree that Europe, "without Britain's leadership" will be lesser. 1. Name two occasions on which Britain played a positive leading role in the EU. Can't do it, can you? Britain was disruptive and uncooperative, demanding special and preferential treatment, from day one of its reluctant EU membership till now. 2. With Britain as it is today (not as it once was), it is clear that the EU is better off without such an illiberal partner (to use your own description of its current politics) . Yes, there are real problems for the EU now with this wave of populism, but if there is one country that is NOT going to help, it's the one that is utterly populist itself now. So please, Britain, just go. Germany and France have this in hand. Bask in your own sense of superiority while the serious nations take care of the current problems.

Your speech is still correct, sir!
A referendum is a good thing about local issues. As soon it gets quite complecated, emotional simple referendum is toxic. David Cameron should have known this.

This in a way is part of the delusion, even wanting as part of EU, there is still a false sense of self-importance about Britain that hasn't been true for more then a century. The Brexiteer may not be honest with themselves, but neither is this clip.

U r not pathetic, u r just not really important for the world. Not economically or in any other form, but that’s not pathetic, just normal for your seize and gdp. Even Zuckerberg ignored your parliament and didn’t show up, but he came running when the EU called. It’s 60 million to a half billion, it is what it is.

Please just revoke Article 50, and inside the EU work together with your closest allies.

Wow! As a leave voter I will keep this on my fav list. When I forget who are the political elites, what they look like, what they sound like, and how much they despise this country and the contempt with which they hold the common man, I will play this vid to remind me exactly why Brexit must happen. No wonder the world is on the rocks when people like him and his ilk are steering the ship.

The whole point of Brexit is to engage globally, not to turn inwards, but to do it on our terms and in our best interests, not those of the EU. This is a fantastic time to go global, I agree, and once we get a clean and proper Brexit we can do exactly that, without any hindrance from the protectionist and ponderous muppets in Brussels.

If only the speaker could back up his waffling statements with facts.
He talks about India as though it will have to choose between the EU and Britain. What is logical about that?
He talks about all the time being taken up by Brexit, but who is stopping Britain from negotiating a deal from a position of strength? Why, remainers! We had the referendum, but the remainers won't let go. They are the ones who are causing all the delay and confusion.
It's not just Britain's 'fault' that its nationals voted for Brexit. We told the EU that there were problems and they just ignored them, apparently thinking that the Brexit vote would not succeed. Either that or they wanted us out anyway.
The simple fact is that open borders have not benefited lower paid workers nor the unemployed. If anything, things have been made worse for them due to strains on housing availability and other social infrastructure such as hospitals/schools, etc.
If having low-paid workers is so good for the economy, why don't we just open the doors to ALL Chinese workers who wish to come here? We could allow nurses, doctors, programmers, scientists and engineers to enter on low-paid zero-hour contracts. Somehow, I don't think that would go down well with the lazy middle classes.
