Euripides, Stasimon Chorus from Orestes (408 B.C.E.)

Показать описание
You wild goddesses who dart across the skies
seeking vengeance for murder, we beg you to free
Agamemnon's son from his raging fury....
We grieve for this boy. Happiness is brief among mortals.
Sorrow and anguish sweep down on it
like a swift gust of wind on a sail boat,
and it sinks under the tossing seas.

God I love the internet! I have learned to appreciate so many new things that I otherwise would've never had a chance to experience.

The women of Argos are imploring the gods to have mercy on Orestes, who murdered his mother Clytemnestra six days before the play began. He had plotted with his sister Electra to punish their mother for infidelity to their father, Agamemnon. The chorus begs that Orestes be released from the madness that has overwhelmed him since the murder.

The English translation:

"You wild goddesses who dart across the skies seeking vengeance for murder, we implore you to free Agamemnon's son from his aging fury. We grive for this boy. Happiness is brief among mortals. Sorrow and anguish sweep down on it like a swift gust of wind on a sloop, and it sinks under the tossing seas."

Translation in description is not a translation of this work but something entirely different.

Actual Translation:

I lament, I lament -- the blood of your mother that drives you insane. Great fortune is not lasting among mortals. Shaking like the sail of a swift ship, some divine power floods it with the rushing, destructive waves of terrible toils like waves from the sea.
