What is resolution? (In Photography) in 3 minutes!

Today I quickly answer the question, what is resolution? This can be quite a confusing term when you take into account the PPI or DPI and are not printing...then there are the numbers that go into the thousands and even millions...so what do they all mean, and how do you know what to look for?

Erudite post, Mike!👍 “Resolution” is what we break on January 2nd.😁 (Had to say that.) Expected more “so what” factor about fine detail in an image vs. blochy boxes. Cam club had a confusing spec that competition images had to “fit” in a certain X by Y pixel rectangle, instead of max length, plus a max 1 Meg file size — further discussion of that export dimension dialog box might help. In the meantime, Monday post = BoxheadMike T shirt (got it!) Cheers!

So if my camera has a sensor with 900 photosites x 300 photosites I could make a 3"x1" print at native resolution at 300 ppi and if I chose to print at 600 ppi I'd halve the print size but I'd have more detail (assuming the ink didn't bleed into the adjacent pixels).

nearly there for me lol. Q. I have a 42 megapixel camera which is a resolution size of 7952 x 5304 but shows on my computer editing software as 5184 x 3464. Im confused. feel like Im not getting the full resolution out of my camera. Is there a problem somewhere? thanks
