Back in the '80s and early '90s, metal was being blamed for all of society's problems, but some parents and reporters didn't take the bait.

When I was in the 8th grade I wore a Black Sabbath shirt to school and the principal tried to confiscate it and make me wear a shirt from the lost and found. I went along with it just to save myself trouble . After school I went to get it back and he told me I could get it back after the school year was over ! I was pissed so I went home and told my Dad, an old school WW2 sailor who had an open mind and liked a lot of rock music, although he preferred Chet Atkins above anyone else. He absolutely hit the roof when I told him I was made to change shirts and was mad as hell when I said they would not return my shirt that day. Next day he drove me to school and followed me into the building. I was a little concerned but I couldn't do much about it. I don't know exactly what he said to the principal but my shirt was at my house that evening and Dad said ' wear it to school tomorrow, nobody will be trying to tell you to change it ' . I did and he was right. Nothing was said about it. I wore rock shirts almost every day. Judas Priest, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, etc so it would have been a real pain in the ass to have metal shirts prohibited from school. After that day lots of my friends wore their concert T shirts and I think my Dad was the reason why they were allowed. Thanks Dad you were the best

"Banning something just makes it more attractive." So very true.

“But because they wear suits and ties, it’s okay; they’re not sick.”

Great quote.

The irony is, metalheads are some of the nicest and chillest people I've encountered.

When I was younger and playing in my band, I was stopped inside of a Wendy’s by a woman in her 70’s by the soda fountain, and she asked me all sorts of questions about my tattoos and stretched ears. She said she used to be a hippie in the 60’s and loved my whole look, and to keep being myself and never change for anyone. We were in a rush to get to our show, and I regret not getting to talk to her longer than I did. I will remember that interaction for the rest of my life. Little stuff like that makes up for so much.

I got conservative parents, but they never criticized my love for metal. My mom just simply told me, "You can listen to metal, just don't blast it so loud in the house." That was her only rule. She never touched the band merch I worked hard to buy. And my Dad even rewarded me with tickets to one of my favorite local band's show one time, and he's no metal fan as well. Basically, they don't care what music you listen to, as long as your character is good. I got lucky for having this type of parent.

It’s so refreshing to see people accepting metal and calling BS on all the accusations and crap

You can really see the guy at 2:28 opening up when her mom considers him a capable and responsible adult. And that's what we should be to our children: the support they need to go through life. Makes it so much easier.

It’s funny how a generation of parents, whose parents thought Elvis was Satanic, began trying to brand metal music as Satanic. It’s almost like Stupidity itself gets passed down

Metal saved my life. Many may not understand that, but this music gave me hope and strength to fight on during my darkest days. I started listening at 13, and I still am at 45.

An English teacher once said to me that her grandparents thought listening to buddy Holly was devil worship. Rock n roll has always been used as a scapegoat for shitty society

I love it when that older mother of six stood up at 3:13 and explained that she could relate to and learnt valuable lessons from the kids. That's 100% kickarse.

I like that old lady in the pink sweater who looks like a church choir leader. “I learned a lot today. They’re very insightful young people.”

3:14 - this lady was the best. Know why? Because she confronted her biases, admitted them out loud and acknowledged that she has much to learn. If only more people embraced her way of thinking...

Man all those people up in arms about Kiss, Maiden and ACDC would have a heart attack just reading any of Belphegor's lyrics.

This whole thing can just be condensed to ''They're just teenagers. They're programmed to rebel. It's normal, it's healthy and it's just what they do. Calm down, take a seat, listen and you might even learn something.''
