There is a clever old method of determining the color of a crayon behind your back which could be used as a lead-in to this trick. A crayon is chosen and placed into the performer's hands while his back turned. He turns to face the audience and secretly scrapes a bit of the colored wax with his fingernail. While gesturing with that hand he can sneak a peak of the color he was given.
