I think one of the secrets regarding Danny Carey is that he's a God. He's a God, right?

As a guitarist and songwriter, when I do drum tracks I often drum like a guitarist myself. So I get it. I don't all the time though. Often think like a bassist too, which I also play. It's good to have different mindsets and approaches on other instruments. They're interchangeable especially if you can play multiple instruments and have different interpretations of how parts are played. Keeps it interesting imo.

YES YES YES! THIS!!! Brann from Mastodon is also very melodic in a lot of songs. I wish music teachers would demonstrate to their students that percussion can also be melodic. No one bats an eye when a guitar player is rythmic. It goes both ways. ... I have been trying to show this to people for forever it seems like. Thank you for sharing this!

He just plays like a drummer. He has been influenced by the likes of Bruford and Bozzio who have lots of polyrhythmic phrases in their style.
