I don't think that anyone should characterize the Chinese PLAAF as "strong." Maybe not to be underestimated and to be respected, but unless China can achieve a series of technology breakthroughs across a broad array of areas the US enjoys a significant lead, China shouldn't be competitive today, in the next few years or ever. Only complacency and self-destructiveness can or could doom the USAF before even considering pushing equipment technology to the "next generation."

That said, I'm all for pushing technological discovery. I expect the things the US military is working hard to develop will eventually be made available commercially to friends, allies and the American Consumer in numerous ways... Like small, highly productive energy sources. If the US can actually develop something like fusion propulsion for aircraft, it could mean personal, wearable fusion sources of energy for the Consumer within the next 100 years, something you see on Sci-Fi shows like Star Trek. It could be the reason humanity can explore outer space and even travel to other planets or perhaps even galaxies. US military spending and technological discovery today in combination with the current revolution in computing power is accelerating human capacity to shape its destiny, hopefully for the good.

The future will see drones; as see in the Ukraine - Russia War; with hypersonic missiles. Having both Spaceship that fly both in the atmosphere and space; then having fighter jets limited to the atmosphere is getting to expensive as their needs to be investment at home with programs that up lift the people or their will be nothing to defend. Too many homeless people is clear statement about the country not caring about the least amongst it's people. their needs to actual movement in this area.
