Love the fact you're American and using a vice from Sheffield. I'm from London UK. My grandad was from Sunderland UK in the North. He was an engineer. Very clever man. When he passed I got one of his vice. It's a record number 3. Mechanically it's sound but I wanna strip it down and paint it up and put new grips on it as it just looks a bit tatty. I'll upload a video of it if you're interested.

this is the only video i was able to find in an hour's time that showed me what my problem was with my vices, i have a smaller bench vice and then a large blacksmith's vice to fix, thankyou for your video it's saved me some headache!

That is great you found new parts ...It is a nice look when you strip an old antique vise to bare metal and coat it with some shellac or some kind of clear coat

Hello,
I may not do a lot of the things you feature in your videos but, I just enjoy watching you tinker with stuff. Just in case one day I have to do the same thing, your explanation is always clear and concise without a lot of fluff. Thank you... Cheers!

Good video really good attention to detail and making sure people can follow along and learn better.

too often you find videos with too little explanation as they show a repair so this is very much appreciated thank you .

My yost vise just dropped its retaining clip. Wasn't able to find any good directions on how to put it back together. Even though it was a different brand, your vid at 9:19 was what I needed to see to get it back together. Thanks!

I love seeing an old, wellmade tool saved from the scrappers! Yost and wilton are the only two that I know for sure are still made in USA.

Long time ago I bought the same Swivel/Quick Release vise (SQ3) mainly because of its QR feature, but sometimes (perhaps most of the time) I was finding myself wishing it didn't have it, so I disabled the QR mechanism. To do so I completely removed the piece you call "front little piece" and that you are holding at 5:20, then I wrapped a cable tie around the split nut you are holding at 5:33, doing so keeps the split nut firmly closed all the time making the release mechanism work just as usual. Great informative video, BTW

Good one Moe.I have a DIY airplane building book from the thirties and they used their vise to make almost everything.

That vice is now good for 50 years. Mine has the quick release, I had no idea how it worked. Good video.

Great video! I have a no. 3 that's probably 40 years old, it was already well used when I got it, it's only been used for my own repairs and works decently well but sticks a bit when unscrewing, nice to see a video taking it apart, well done :-)

Holy crap I haven't seen any of your videos in probably a couple years. I forgot your channel name (sorry) So I just spent an hour hunting you down. So glad to find you again. I'll be sure to keep that notification bell on. Good to see you're still making interesting and entertaining videos. Keep it up!

I have this same vice, a Record number 3 but in navy blue. Made in England. Was considering replacing it but thought I'd quickly check YT to see if it could be repaired, so thank you for the excellent video. I'm on the South Coat of the UK in the county of Sussex. My vice sends his regards to his brother in America :)

I just renewed a Record number 6 and replaced my smaller Record number 3. I was given the 6 for free.
As my Dad says, you can do small vice jobs in a large vice but you can’t do large vice jobs in a small vice. So get the biggest vice you can.

The company Record is pronounced the same as a vinyl record.
